Coalition Troops Provide Aid for Injured Afghans

WASHINGTON, Aug. 23, 2011 — Coali­tion forces today admin­is­tered first aid to injured Afghans and then trans­port­ed them for fur­ther med­ical treat­ment fol­low­ing a Tal­iban attack that killed five civil­ians in the Nadir Shah dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Khow­st province, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

In Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— Afghan and coali­tion forces killed three insur­gents and cap­tured 10 oth­ers dur­ing mul­ti­ple oper­a­tions in Region­al Com­mand East. 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force killed sev­er­al Haqqani insur­gents dur­ing an oper­a­tion in the Zur­mat dis­trict of Pak­tiya province. The force was search­ing for a Haqqani net­work leader when it was attacked by sev­er­al armed insur­gents from a near­by com­pound. The force respond­ed to the attack, killing the insur­gents. The insur­gents were armed with mul­ti­ple grenades, AK-47 rifles, and 30 pounds of explosives. 

— In the San­gin dis­trict of Hel­mand province, a com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force detained sev­er­al sus­pects dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion tar­get­ing a Tal­iban leader. The leader directs Tal­iban oper­a­tions in Kotozay Vil­lage, and pro­vides sup­port and guid­ance to insur­gents in the district. 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force detained a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor and sev­er­al of his asso­ciates dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion in the Shah Wali Kot dis­trict of Kan­da­har province. The facil­i­ta­tor was respon­si­ble for trans­port­ing rock­ets and weapons from the Tar­nak wa Jaldek dis­trict into the Daman dis­trict, and pro­vid­ed reports to senior Tal­iban leaders. 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force detained a Haqqani net­work leader and two sus­pects dur­ing a secu­ri­ty search In the Khost dis­trict of Khost province. The cap­tured leader was involved in road­side bomb and oth­er attacks, and he also dis­trib­uted insur­gent weapons and supplies. 

— In Ghazni city in Ghazni province, a com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained two sus­pect­ed insur­gents while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader. The leader man­ages fight­ers, facil­i­tates road­side bomb oper­a­tions, and coor­di­nates with oth­er Tal­iban lead­ers and facil­i­ta­tors in the area. 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force detained sev­er­al sus­pects while search­ing for a Haqqani net­work facil­i­ta­tor in the Jani Khel dis­trict of Pak­tiya province. The tar­get­ed facil­i­ta­tor par­tic­i­pates in direct-action attacks and moves weapons and equip­ment to high-pro­file insur­gent lead­ers in Khost province. The secu­ri­ty force con­fis­cat­ed mul­ti­ple rock­et pro­pelled grenades, mor­tar rounds and AK-47 rifles. 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force detained a Hezb‑e Isla­mi Gul­bud­din insur­gent leader and two sus­pects dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion in the Nerkh dis­trict of War­dak province. The detained leader was respon­si­ble for plan­ning and coor­di­nat­ing attacks, includ­ing road­side bomb­ings, against Afghan secu­ri­ty forces.
