Javier SOLANA, EU High Rep­re­sen­ta­tive for the CFSP, stressed the impor­tance of the strate­gic part­ner­ship with Chi­na at meet­ing with Prime Min­is­ter WEN JIABAO

Javier SOLANA, Euro­pean Union High Rep­re­sen­ta­tive for the Com­mon For­eign and Secu­ri­ty Pol­i­cy (CFSP), had a meet­ing today with Wen JIABAO, Prime Min­is­ter of Chi­na. The High Rep­re­sen­ta­tive and the Chi­nese prime min­is­ter dis­cussed EU-Chi­na rela­tions and the main top­ics on the inter­na­tion­al agenda.

Mr SOLANA and Mr WEN JIABAO stressed the impor­tance of main­tain­ing a high lev­el of engage­ment in their deep­en­ing strate­gic part­ner­ship and they under­lined the impor­tance of their long-stand­ing and com­pre­hen­sive bilat­er­al dia­logue. They dis­cussed the major chal­lenges in the field of inter­na­tion­al secu­ri­ty for which a joint approach was very impor­tant, includ­ing rela­tions with Iran.

Mr SOLANA empha­sised that Chi­na had a fun­da­men­tal role to play in the future, long-term struc­ture of inter­na­tion­al rela­tions but also in find­ing solu­tions with­in the cur­rent G‑20 con­text of cri­sis man­age­ment. He said that the EU per­ceives Chi­na both as an impor­tant eco­nom­ic play­er and also as a cat­a­lyst of sta­bil­i­ty and con­flict resolution.
