Combined Force Kills 2 Insurgents, Detains Suspect

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2, 2011 — An Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force killed two insur­gents and detained one sus­pect while search­ing for a Haqqani net­work leader in the Yahya Khel dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Pak­ti­ka province yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The Haqqani leader over­sees insur­gent fight­ing cells and is respon­si­ble for attacks against Afghan forces. 

Mul­ti­ple weapons and bomb-mak­ing mate­ri­als were seized by the secu­ri­ty force dur­ing the operation. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— A com­bined patrol killed sev­er­al insur­gents and detained two indi­vid­u­als in the Baghran dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The force seized 8,800 pounds of pop­py seeds, 66 pounds of opi­um and some small arms. 

— In the Tarin Kot dis­trict of Uruz­gan province, a com­bined patrol killed two insur­gents and detained sev­er­al oth­er indi­vid­u­als. The patrol also seized some small arms. 

— A com­bined patrol dis­cov­ered a large impro­vised explo­sive device in the Zharay dis­trict of Kan­da­har province. The com­bined force request­ed assis­tance from an explo­sive ord­nance dis­pos­al team, which safe­ly destroyed the IED. One unin­hab­it­ed build­ing was dam­aged. No civil­ians were harmed dur­ing the operation. 

— A com­bined force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pects while search­ing for a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor in the San­gin dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The facil­i­ta­tor dis­trib­utes weapons and explo­sives in the dis­trict and plans attacks against coali­tion forces. 

— In the Shin­war dis­trict of Nan­garhar province, a weapons cache was turned over to Afghan forces as part of a local dis­ar­ma­ment pro­gram. The cache con­tained two rock­et-pro­pelled grenade launch­ers, eight RPGs, one mor­tar tube, 74 82mm mor­tar rounds, one recoil­less rifle, three heavy machine guns, 90 12.7mm rounds and var­i­ous weapon mounts. 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pects dur­ing a search for a Haqqani net­work leader in the Sabari dis­trict of Khost province. The insur­gent leader dis­trib­utes rock­ets, firearms, and bomb com­po­nents and plans attacks through­out the district. 

— In the Ghazni dis­trict of Ghazni province, a coali­tion airstrike killed sev­er­al insur­gents and destroyed their fight­ing posi­tion. Some rifles and RPGs were con­fis­cat­ed. No civil­ians were harmed dur­ing the operation. 

— Afghan and coali­tion forces killed five insur­gents and detained four sus­pects dur­ing oper­a­tions in east­ern Afghanistan. Coali­tion airstrikes killed four insur­gents in the Ghazni dis­trict of Ghazni province. Anoth­er airstrike killed one insur­gent in the Sha­ran dis­trict of Pak­ti­ka province. Afghan sol­diers detained four sus­pects in the Bara­ki Barak dis­trict of Log­ar province. 

— Two Afghan civil­ians were wound­ed by an IED det­o­na­tion in the Khow­st dis­trict of Khow­st province. Coali­tion forces pro­vid­ed med­ical care and trans­port­ed one of the wound­ed to a near­by clin­ic for treat­ment. The oth­er injured per­son was treat­ed at the scene and released. 

In Oct. 31 Afghanistan operations: 

— A coali­tion patrol con­sist­ing of Afghan and Roman­ian troops dis­cov­ered a cache con­tain­ing mor­tar rounds and bomb-mak­ing mate­ri­als in the Qalat dis­trict of Zab­ul province.
