Afghan, Coalition Force Kills 2 Insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 3, 2011 — A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force killed two insur­gents dur­ing a search for an Islam­ic Move­ment of Uzbek­istan facil­i­ta­tor in the Khan­abad dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Kun­duz province yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The tar­get­ed facil­i­ta­tor is respon­si­ble for coor­di­nat­ing sui­cide attacks through­out the province. The secu­ri­ty force was threat­ened by two armed insur­gents. The force engaged the two men, killing them. 

In oth­er Afghanistan oper­a­tions yesterday: 

– A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained a Tal­iban leader and one of his asso­ciates dur­ing an oper­a­tion in the Shah Joy dis­trict of Zab­ul province. The leader pro­vid­ed sup­port to oth­er Tal­iban lead­ers and fight­ers in the Arghandab dis­trict and facil­i­tat­ed move­ment of for­eign fight­ers. He also trained insur­gents to con­struct road­side bombs. 

– A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained one Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion in the Zharay dis­trict of Kan­da­har province. The facil­i­ta­tor was respon­si­ble for the move­ment of nar­cotics and also assist­ed in road­side bomb attacks. 

– Also in Kan­da­har province, a com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained sev­er­al sus­pects dur­ing a clear­ance oper­a­tion in the Spin Boldak district. 

– In the Mai­wand dis­trict, a com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force seized a drug cache con­tain­ing 220 pounds of marijuana. 

– A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained sev­er­al sus­pects dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion in the Nahr‑e Saraj dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The tar­get of the oper­a­tion was a Tal­iban leader respon­si­ble for insur­gent actions in the area. 

– In the Zur­mat dis­trict of Pak­tiya province, a com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force cap­tured a Haqqani net­work leader. The leader was respon­si­ble for attacks against Afghan army checkpoints.
