Iraq — Iraqi Forces Arrest 7 With Suspected Terrorism Ties

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20, 2010 — Iraqi secu­ri­ty forces arrest­ed sev­en peo­ple with sus­pect­ed ties to ter­ror­ist groups in recent oper­a­tions in Iraq, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

Near Bal­ad today, Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors searched sev­er­al build­ings for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq leader alleged­ly respon­si­ble for attacks against Iraqi and coali­tion forces. Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest four sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciates of the want­ed man. 

In an oper­a­tion near Bagh­dad today, Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors searched sev­er­al build­ings for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq leader who alleged­ly is respon­si­ble for facil­i­tat­ing vehi­cle-borne bomb attacks and alleged­ly has close ties to senior mem­bers of the ter­ror­ist orga­ni­za­tion. Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene, includ­ing a 107 mm rock­et, led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest a sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciate of the want­ed man. 

Yes­ter­day in west­ern Mosul, Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors searched a build­ing for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq mem­ber who alleged­ly has close ties to the organization’s senior lead­ers. The infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest two sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciates of the want­ed man.
