Combined Force Detains Insurgents, Seizes Weapons

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 2, 2011 — A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pect­ed insur­gents while search­ing for Haqqani ter­ror­ist net­work leader in the Mata Khan dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Pak­ti­ka province yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The tar­get of the search is respon­si­ble for kid­nap­pings and for attacks against Afghan forces, offi­cials said. 

While search­ing the area, the secu­ri­ty force con­fis­cat­ed a machine gun, grenades, assault rifles, bomb-mak­ing mate­ri­als and chest racks. 

In oth­er oper­a­tions yes­ter­day around Afghanistan: 

— A com­bined force in Bagh­lan province’s Pul‑e Khum­ri dis­trict detained a Tal­iban leader who direct­ed sui­cide-bomb attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces. 

— In Hel­mand province’s Kaja­ki dis­trict, a com­bined force detained a sus­pect­ed insur­gent while search­ing for a man who directs Tal­iban oper­a­tions in the area. 

— A com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insur­gents in Helmand’s Wash­er dis­trict while search­ing for a man who leads a Tal­iban road­side-bomb cell in Kan­da­har province. 

— Also in Hel­mand province, a com­bined patrol detained two sus­pect­ed insur­gents in Nahr‑e Saraj while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader who builds road­side bombs and pro­vides logis­ti­cal sup­port to oth­er Tal­iban chiefs in the area. 

— A com­bined force detained a Haqqani net­work facil­i­ta­tor respon­si­ble for coor­di­nat­ing road­side-bomb attacks, along with sev­er­al oth­er sus­pect­ed insur­gents, in Khost province’s Ter­ayzai district. 

— In Pak­tia province’s Zur­mat dis­trict, a com­bined force detained a sus­pect­ed insur­gent while search­ing for a Haqqani net­work leader who directs attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces. 

— A com­bined force in Nan­garhar province’s His­arak dis­trict killed an insur­gent after the man attacked them dur­ing a search for the Tal­iban-appoint­ed gov­ern­ing offi­cial for oper­a­tions in the dis­trict. He is respon­si­ble for the move­ment of for­eign fight­ers and weapons used in attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces. 

— In War­dak province’s Nerkh dis­trict, a com­bined force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pect­ed insur­gents while search­ing for a man who pro­vides direct sup­port to senior Hezb‑E Isla­mi Gul­bud­din ter­ror­ist orga­ni­za­tion leaders.
