Afghan-led Security Force Detains Insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 13, 2011 — An Afghan-led com­bined secu­ri­ty force detained a Haqqani net­work leader and one sus­pect­ed insur­gent in the Ter­ayzai dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Khost province yes­ter­day, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The leader was respon­si­ble for the dis­tri­b­u­tion of weapons and sup­plies through­out the dis­trict, and also emplaced road­side bombs in the area. 

In oth­er Afghanistan news yesterday: 

— An Afghan-led com­bined force detained mul­ti­ple sus­pects dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion tar­get­ing an Islam­ic Move­ment of Uzbek­istan leader in the Burkah dis­trict of Bagh­lan province. The leader was recent­ly appoint­ed head gov­ern­ing offi­cial for insur­gent oper­a­tions in the district. 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion force detained one sus­pect­ed insur­gent while search­ing for a Tal­iban facil­i­ta­tor in the Nahr‑e Saraj dis­trict of Hel­mand province. The facil­i­ta­tor is a smug­gler, respon­si­ble for trans­port­ing weapons col­lect­ed from Pak­istan between Afghanistan’s Spin Boldak and Nahr‑e Sir­aj dis­tricts. Addi­tion­al­ly, he sup­ports asso­ciates respon­si­ble for the move­ment of weapons from Kan­da­har City to Nahr‑e Siraj. 

— An Afghan-led secu­ri­ty force detained two sus­pect­ed insur­gents dur­ing a clear­ance oper­a­tion in the Zharay dis­trict, of Kan­da­har province. 

— An Afghan-led force detained two sus­pects dur­ing a search for a Hezb‑e Isla­mi Gul­bud­din leader in the Alin­gar dis­trict of Lagh­man province. The secu­ri­ty force was search­ing for the leader after receiv­ing sev­er­al reports he was plan­ning an attack against Afghan and coali­tion forces. Addi­tion­al­ly, the leader is respon­si­ble for pre­vi­ous attacks against the Afghan army.
