Sin­ga­pore Hosts the 5th ASEAN Air Chiefs Con­fer­ence

Min­is­ter for Defence Mr Teo Chee Hean offi­ci­at­ed at the 5th ASEAN Air Chiefs Con­fer­ence (AACC) in Sin­ga­pore this morning.

The AACC plays an impor­tant role in enhanc­ing peace and sta­bil­i­ty in the region, and in pro­mot­ing greater inte­gra­tion and part­ner­ship among the ASEAN Air Forces It also serves as a use­ful plat­form for the ASEAN Air Force Chiefs to meet reg­u­lar­ly to dis­cuss issues of com­mon pro­fes­sion­al inter­ests. The theme for the 5th AACC was “Part­ners in Peace and Secu­ri­ty”. All ten ASEAN mem­ber coun­tries attend­ed the con­fer­ence. The par­tic­i­pants dis­cussed a range of secu­ri­ty issues includ­ing the threat of ter­ror­ism fac­ing the region and oppor­tu­ni­ties for co-oper­a­tion between the ASEAN Air Forces.

Dur­ing the con­fer­ence, a Dec­la­ra­tion of Sup­port for ASEAN Air Forces Co-oper­a­tion in Address­ing Ter­ror­ism was signed. This agree­ment reaf­firms the com­mit­ment of all the ASEAN Air Forces to fight ter­ror­ism togeth­er, by striv­ing to assist one anoth­er through mea­sures such as train­ing, tech­ni­cal coop­er­a­tion and infor­ma­tion sharing.

The 5th AACC was host­ed by the Repub­lic of Sin­ga­pore Air Force (RSAF) and held in con­junc­tion with the inau­gur­al Sin­ga­pore Air­show 2008. Pre­vi­ous AACCs were held in Thai­land (2004), Malaysia (2005), Indone­sia (2006) and Philip­pines (2007).
