Iraq — Iraqi Forces Kill Terrorism Suspect, Detain 7 Others

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2010 — Iraqi secu­ri­ty forces killed a ter­ror­ism sus­pect and detained sev­en oth­ers in oper­a­tions over the last two days in Iraq, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

In Mansuriyah today, Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors were search­ing for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq mem­ber who alleged­ly has worked close­ly with the organization’s lead­er­ship in Diyala province to sup­ply weapons and explo­sives to ter­ror­ists.

As the com­bined force moved toward the tar­get­ed build­ing, a man with an assault rifle tried to engage them and was shot and killed. Dur­ing the exchange, a man suf­fered a gun­shot wound to his arm when he was struck by a ric­o­chet bul­let, and he received imme­di­ate med­ical atten­tion.

Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest four sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq crim­i­nal asso­ciates.

Also today, Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors arrest­ed a Promised Day Brigade leader who alleged­ly sup­plies and trans­ports weapons in Diyala province, along with a sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciate.

In Latafia yes­ter­day, Iraqi forces and U.S. advi­sors search­ing for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq leader who alleged­ly is involved in vehi­cle-borne bomb attacks iden­ti­fied and arrest­ed a sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciate of the want­ed man.
