Irak — Iraqis Arrest Suspected Vehicle Bomber, Extortionists

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2010 — Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors arrest­ed a sus­pect­ed vehi­cle bomber and four accused extor­tion­ists in Iraq in recent days, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

Iraqi forces arrest­ed a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq mem­ber dur­ing a com­bined May 7 oper­a­tion about 70 miles north­east of Bagh­dad. The sus­pect is believed to have ties to vehi­cle-bomb attacks and high-lev­el al-Qai­da in Iraq lead­ers in Diyala province.

On May 6, Iraqi forces in search of a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq extor­tion leader arrest­ed four sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq mem­bers dur­ing a com­bined oper­a­tion in east­ern Mosul.

Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest four asso­ciates of the want­ed man.
