Irak — Iraqis Arrest Several Terrorism Suspects

WASHINGTON, June 25, 2010 — Iraqi forces work­ing with U.S. advi­sors arrest­ed sev­er­al ter­ror­ism sus­pects in recent oper­a­tions in Iraq, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

In west­ern Mosul today, Iraqi forces and U.S. advi­sors searched sev­er­al build­ings for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq mem­ber alleged­ly involved in the facil­i­ta­tion of for­eign fight­ers. Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest the want­ed man and a sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciate.

Also today, Iraqi forces and U.S. advi­sors searched two build­ings north­west of Bagh­dad for a sus­pect­ed al-Qai­da in Iraq leader alleged­ly involved in road­side-bomb pro­duc­tion. Dur­ing the search, the secu­ri­ty force found machine-gun ammu­ni­tion and sev­er­al assault vests with full weapon mag­a­zines. Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest four sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciates of the want­ed man.

North­west of Bagh­dad yes­ter­day, Iraqi forces arrest­ed three sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciates of the Jaysh al-Mah­di ter­ror­ist group. Iraqi forces and U.S. advi­sors searched two build­ings for a sus­pect who is alleged­ly involved in road­side-bomb attacks against Iraqi and coali­tion forces on behalf of the ter­ror­ist group. Infor­ma­tion and evi­dence gath­ered at the scene led Iraqi forces to iden­ti­fy and arrest three sus­pect­ed crim­i­nal asso­ciates of the want­ed man.
