Forces Kill 2 Insurgents in Ghazni Province-110429

WASHINGTON, April 28, 2011 — Com­bined forces killed two armed insur­gents in a gun bat­tle and detained sev­er­al oth­er sus­pect­ed insur­gents yes­ter­day in the Ab Band dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Ghazni province, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

Troops were search­ing for a Haqqani ter­ror­ist net­work leader who is respon­si­ble for lead­ing attacks on secu­ri­ty forces in west­ern Pak­ti­ka and south­east­ern Ghazni provinces. Secu­ri­ty forces already had detained two sus­pects when they came under attack. Troops returned fire, killing two gun­men, and they even­tu­al­ly detained sev­er­al oth­ers sus­pect­ed of being Haqqani ter­ror­ists, offi­cials said.

In oth­er oper­a­tions yes­ter­day through­out Afghanistan:

— Secu­ri­ty forces detained sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insur­gents, while search­ing for a Haqqani net­work bomb mak­er in Khost province’s Sabari dis­trict.

— Forces found sev­er­al drug and weapons stock­piles. Oper­a­tions result­ed in seizure of 2,500 pounds of hashish, 400 assault rifle rounds, 37 pres­sure plates, 12 mor­tar rounds, five sui­cide-bomb vests, three assault rifles and assort­ed bomb-mak­ing mate­ri­als.
