State­ment by the spokesper­son of HR Cather­ine Ash­ton, on Niger

The spokesper­son of Cather­ine Ash­ton, High Rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the Union for For­eign Affairs and Secu­ri­ty Pol­i­cy and Vice Pres­i­dent of the Com­mis­sion, issued the fol­low­ing state­ment today on the sit­u­a­tion in Niger:

“The HR fol­lows close­ly the polit­i­cal cri­sis that Niger has been fac­ing. The EU shares AU and ECOWAS deep con­cern on the lat­est devel­op­ments and sup­ports their medi­at­ing efforts . The HR con­demns the seizure of the pow­er by a mil­i­tary coup d´état in Niger and calls upon all actors involved to engage imme­di­ate­ly in a demo­c­ra­t­ic process allow­ing for rapid estab­lish­ment of the con­sti­tu­tion­al order in the coun­try.”
