EU/Irak — Statement about Iraqi elections

Statement by HR Catherine Ashton on the publication of the certified results of the Iraqi elections Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made the following statement:

“I welcome the formal certification of the 7 March election results by the Federal Supreme Court published on 1 June 2010 in Iraq.

The EU looks forward to the Council of Representatives meeting shortly, in accordance with the Constitution, and to the rapid formation of a stable government, allowing Iraq to confront the challenges ahead. The EU continues to support Iraq in its efforts to reconstruct the country and to build and consolidate a democratic political system. I look forward to working with the new Government and Council of Representatives and reiterate our commitment to a long term partnership.

I would like to commend the work of the Independent High Electoral Commission and other Iraqi institutions who have contributed to this process.”
