Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the CFSP, stressed the importance of the strategic partnership with China at meeting with Prime Minister WEN JIABAO

Javier SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), had a meeting today with Wen JIABAO, Prime Minister of China. The High Representative and the Chinese prime minister discussed EU-China relations and the main topics on the international agenda.

Mr SOLANA and Mr WEN JIABAO stressed the importance of maintaining a high level of engagement in their deepening strategic partnership and they underlined the importance of their long-standing and comprehensive bilateral dialogue. They discussed the major challenges in the field of international security for which a joint approach was very important, including relations with Iran.

Mr SOLANA emphasised that China had a fundamental role to play in the future, long-term structure of international relations but also in finding solutions within the current G-20 context of crisis management. He said that the EU perceives China both as an important economic player and also as a catalyst of stability and conflict resolution.
