Combined Security Force Kills Several Insurgents

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 1, 2011 — A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force killed sev­er­al insur­gents and detained one sus­pect yes­ter­day dur­ing an oper­a­tion in the Charkh dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Log­ar province, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

The Afghan-led force was tar­get­ing the deputy Tal­iban-appoint­ed gov­ern­ing offi­cial for coor­di­nat­ing and con­duct­ing attacks against Afghan secu­ri­ty forces. 

The force con­duct­ed a call-out at a com­pound when they were attacked by sev­er­al armed insur­gents. The force returned fire, killing them. 

The force con­fis­cat­ed a rock­et-pro­pelled grenade launch­er with war­heads, a heavy machine gun, grenades, an assault rifle, chest racks and sev­er­al rounds of ammunition. 

In oth­er oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— A com­bined secu­ri­ty force in Kun­duz province’s Archi dis­trict detained two sus­pect­ed insur­gents while search­ing for a Tal­iban-appoint­ed gov­ern­ing offi­cial linked to road­side-bomb and sui­cide attacks in the district. 

— A com­bined force in Hel­mand province’s Now Zad dis­trict killed an armed insur­gent while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader respon­si­ble for attacks in the Wash­er district. 

— Also in Hel­mand, a force detained sev­er­al indi­vid­u­als with sus­pect­ed Tal­iban ties while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader in the Nawah-ye Barakzai dis­trict. The leader, who recent­ly returned from Pak­istan, is involved with road­side bomb­ings and attacks in the Gowra­gi area. 

— A com­bined secu­ri­ty force cap­tured a Tal­iban orga­niz­er and a sus­pect­ed insur­gent in Kan­da­har province’s Zharay dis­trict. The orga­niz­er moves mate­ri­als and per­son­nel in the Zharay and Pan­jwa’i districts. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Haqqani ter­ror­ist net­work orga­niz­er and sev­er­al of his asso­ciates dur­ing a night­time oper­a­tion in Khost province’s Sabari dis­trict. The orga­niz­er was respon­si­ble for attacks against Afghan secu­ri­ty forces, and for trans­fer­ring ammu­ni­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tions for Haqqani insur­gents in the area. Res­i­dents helped the force iden­ti­fy the suspects. 

— Also in Sabari, a com­bined force cap­tured anoth­er Haqqani orga­niz­er and a sus­pect­ed insur­gent. The orga­niz­er coor­di­nat­ed and exe­cut­ed indi­rect-fire attacks against Afghan troops. 

— In Pak­tia province’s Zur­mat dis­trict, a com­bined force detained two sus­pect­ed insur­gents while search­ing for a Haqqani leader who con­ducts road­side-bomb and indi­rect-fire attacks against secu­ri­ty forces. 

— One per­son was detained dur­ing a secu­ri­ty oper­a­tion in Lagh­man province’s Alin­gar dis­trict, where com­bined forces tar­get­ed a Tal­iban leader involved in attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces.
