KABUL, Afghanistan, July 1, 2011 — A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents and detained one suspect yesterday during an operation in the Charkh district of Afghanistan’s Logar province, military officials reported.
The Afghan-led force was targeting the deputy Taliban-appointed governing official for coordinating and conducting attacks against Afghan security forces.
The force conducted a call-out at a compound when they were attacked by several armed insurgents. The force returned fire, killing them.
The force confiscated a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with warheads, a heavy machine gun, grenades, an assault rifle, chest racks and several rounds of ammunition.
In other operations yesterday:
— A combined security force in Kunduz province’s Archi district detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban-appointed governing official linked to roadside-bomb and suicide attacks in the district.
— A combined force in Helmand province’s Now Zad district killed an armed insurgent while searching for a Taliban leader responsible for attacks in the Washer district.
— Also in Helmand, a force detained several individuals with suspected Taliban ties while searching for a Taliban leader in the Nawah-ye Barakzai district. The leader, who recently returned from Pakistan, is involved with roadside bombings and attacks in the Gowragi area.
— A combined security force captured a Taliban organizer and a suspected insurgent in Kandahar province’s Zharay district. The organizer moves materials and personnel in the Zharay and Panjwa’i districts.
— A combined force captured a Haqqani terrorist network organizer and several of his associates during a nighttime operation in Khost province’s Sabari district. The organizer was responsible for attacks against Afghan security forces, and for transferring ammunition and communications for Haqqani insurgents in the area. Residents helped the force identify the suspects.
— Also in Sabari, a combined force captured another Haqqani organizer and a suspected insurgent. The organizer coordinated and executed indirect-fire attacks against Afghan troops.
— In Paktia province’s Zurmat district, a combined force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani leader who conducts roadside-bomb and indirect-fire attacks against security forces.
— One person was detained during a security operation in Laghman province’s Alingar district, where combined forces targeted a Taliban leader involved in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
