Combined Operations Target Insurgents, Weapons Drugs

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18, 2011 — Afghan and coali­tion forces worked togeth­er in var­i­ous recent oper­a­tions to kill and cap­ture insur­gents, uncov­er their weapons stock­piles and seize drugs that gen­er­ate funds for ene­my fight­ers, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

In oper­a­tions yesterday: 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force detained numer­ous sus­pect­ed insur­gents dur­ing an oper­a­tion Pak­ti­ka province’s Gomal dis­trict in search of a facil­i­ta­tor who plans and con­ducts attacks against coali­tion forces in the Saro­bi and Orgun districts. 

— In Kun­duz province’s Kun­duz dis­trict, a com­bined force detained a sus­pect dur­ing an oper­a­tion in search of an insur­gent leader who plans sui­cide-bomb attacks in Kun­duz and Badakhshan provinces. 

— A com­bined force cap­tured a Tal­iban leader dur­ing an oper­a­tion in Kan­da­har province’s Kan­da­har dis­trict. The leader received ship­ments of explo­sives and weapons used to sup­port Tal­iban oper­a­tions in the area, offi­cials said. 

— In Hel­mand province’s Reg‑e Khan Neshin dis­trict, a coali­tion patrol seized 315 pounds of hashish and detained a sus­pect­ed insurgent. 

In Oct. 16 operations: 

— A com­bined Afghan and coali­tion secu­ri­ty force killed sev­er­al insur­gents in Her­at province’s Nizam‑E Shahid dis­trict dur­ing an oper­a­tion tar­get­ing an insur­gent leader respon­si­ble for kid­nap­pings and for plan­ning and coor­di­nat­ing attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces. The secu­ri­ty force killed the insur­gents after being fired upon with rock­et-pro­pelled grenades, heavy machine guns and small arms. Afghan secu­ri­ty forces detained a sus­pect­ed insur­gent after the engagement. 

— In Zab­ul province’s Khak‑E Afghan dis­trict, a com­bined force killed sev­er­al insur­gents who fired upon them dur­ing an oper­a­tion tar­get­ing a Tal­iban leader. The secu­ri­ty force seized small arms, ammu­ni­tion and com­mu­ni­ca­tion devices and detained sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insurgents. 

— A com­bined patrol in Kan­da­har province’s Zharay dis­trict seized 176 pounds of hashish and detained three sus­pect­ed insurgents. 

— In Kan­da­har province’s Kan­da­har dis­trict, Kan­da­har province, a com­bined patrol found and destroyed 12 80 mm rounds. 

— A com­bined patrol in Khost province’s Musa Khel dis­trict found and destroyed five home­made bombs, four bomb primers, three hand grenades, a grenade fuse, var­i­ous ammu­ni­tion and two Afghan army uni­forms. Two sus­pect­ed insur­gents were detained. 

— In Ghazni province’s Ghazni dis­trict, a com­bined force detained sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insur­gents dur­ing a search for an insur­gent leader who is respon­si­ble for the deaths of four Afghan police offi­cers and numer­ous attacks against Afghan and coali­tion forces.
