Afghanistan — Forces Detain Insurgents in Kandahar City

WASHINGTON, May 11, 2011 — Com­bined forces yes­ter­day cap­tured sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insur­gents dur­ing an oper­a­tion con­duct­ed in the Kan­da­har City dis­trict of Afghanistan’s Kan­da­har province, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

Troops were search­ing for a Haqqani net­work ter­ror­ist leader linked to insur­gent oper­a­tions in Pak­tiya province as well as recruit­ing poten­tial sui­cide bombers.

Also in Kan­da­har province yes­ter­day, secu­ri­ty forces detained two sus­pect­ed insur­gents while search­ing for a Tal­iban leader tied to bomb-mak­ing activ­i­ties and oth­er insur­gent oper­a­tions through­out the province’s Pan­jwai dis­trict.

In Pak­tiya province’s Ahmad­abad dis­trict, troops found 255 machine-gun rounds, 15 rock­et-pro­pelled grenades, three land mines, three hand grenades and three rock­et-pro­pelled grenade boost­ers, which were destroyed in place.
