Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill, Detain Insurgents

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2011 — Afghan and coali­tion forces killed two ene­my fight­ers and detained sev­er­al sus­pect­ed insur­gents yes­ter­day in oper­a­tions through­out Afghanistan, mil­i­tary offi­cials report­ed.

— A coali­tion patrol in Nim­roz province’s Knash Rod dis­trict observed three insur­gents plant­i­ng road­side bombs. Troops engaged the men with small-arms fire, killing two of them.

— In Kan­da­har province’s Mai­wand dis­trict, Afghan and coali­tion forces detained a Tal­iban bomb mak­er and sev­er­al oth­er sus­pect­ed insur­gents. Tips from local res­i­dents led secu­ri­ty forces to the mil­i­tants’ loca­tion, where they were detained with­out inci­dent.

— Sep­a­rate insur­gent bomb­ings in Kan­da­har province left five Afghan civil­ians wound­ed. In the province’s Kan­da­har dis­trict, four civil­ians, includ­ing two chil­dren, were injured by a road­side bomb. Anoth­er bystander
