Areas of Responsibility


A Unified Combatant Command (UCC) is a United States joint military command composed of forces from two or more services, has a broad and continuing mission, and is organized either on a geographical basis (known as "Area Of Responsibility", AOR) or on a functional basis. Each combatant command is headed by a four star general or admiral selected by the Secretary of Defense and President and confirmed by Congress.

Unified Combatant Command - US Central Command (CENTCOM) US Central Command (CENTCOM)
  • Area of responsibility: Middle East, East Africa and Central Asia
  • Headquarter: MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa (Florida), USA
  • Commanding Officer: Lieutenant General Martin E. Dempsey, United States Army (temporary until General David Petraeus takes over)


Unified Combatant Command - US European Command (EUCOM) US European Command (EUCOM)
  • Area of responsibility: Europe and a part of the Middle East
  • Headquarter: Patch Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany
  • Commanding Officer: General Bantz J. Craddock, United States Army


Unified Combatant Command - US Pacific Command (PACOM) US Pacific Command (PACOM)
  • Area of responsibility: Pacific and Indian Ocean (incl. Hawaii and the troops in Alaska)

  • Area of responsibility: joint concept development and experimentation, joint training, joint interoperability and integration, and the primary conventional force provider

Unified Combatant Command - US Special Operations Command US Special Operations Command (SOCOM)
  • Area of responsibility: Provide fully capable Special Operations Forces to defend the United States and its interests. PLAN and synchronize operations against terrorist networks.
  • Headquarter: MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, USA
  • Commanding Officer: Admiral Eric T. Olson, United States Navy

  • Area of responsibility: Control of the US nuclear weapons, space operations and global missile defense
