India - As A Sea Power - Some Way To Go

Despite insufficient resources, the Navy had, by the early 1990s, acquired capabilities that would be considered ‘blue water’. Two aircraft carriers, 19 submarines and equal number of guided missile destroyers / frigates supported by missile patrol vessels and corvettes and a couple of fleet tankers comprised a well balanced fleet capable of being deployed in a wide spectrum of contingencies. Supplementing this force was a small but compact amphibious element. This force has suffered some degradation in the last decade and is unlikely to see substantive enhancement anytime soon. more...

India - Force Planning To Shape India's Maritime Space: The Nuclear Dimension

Both Julian Corbett and Admiral of the Fleet Sergei Gorshkov had an astute perspective of the importance of a theory of war. Such a hypothesis, they advocated, provided a context to formulate and enable a strategic policy to deter war and, should the need arise, to wage that war. Corbett suggested that “by maritime strategy we mean the principles that govern a war in which the sea is a substantial factor” he went on to add “Since men live upon the land and not upon the sea, great issues between nations at war have always been decided - except in the rarest cases - either by what your army can do against your enemy’s territory and national life, or else by the fear of what the fleet makes it possible for your army to do”. more...

Hospital CBRN Defence - Threat of Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear Weapons

One of the greatest disaster scenarios is the use of WMDs by non-state actors. India is enhancing its commitment to nuclear energy. These reactors are also potential targets for mass casualty terror strikes. The recent Tsunami in Japan led to a nuclear meltdown on an unprecedented scale. CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radioactive and Nuclear Weapons) terrorism or catastrophes with a radiological dimension triggered by natural or man-made disasters are an eventuality that we must be well prepared for in this country.  more...

Pakistan's role in Afghanistan: Geo-political Perceptions

Events in Afghanistan have a critical impact on India’s Internal Security because as Robert Gates, former Director CIA and then US Defense Secretary, said some years ago, “22 per cent of all terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir were either from Afghanistan or had been trained there”. The writer, one of India’s foremost experts on Afghanistan and a former DGMI, carries out an incisive analysis of Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan - especially the spoiler dimension that provides sanctuary support to the Haqqani, Quetta and Hekmatyar Shooras and has recently torpedoed the peace talks between the Karzai government and the Taliban. In getting Rabbani killed and targeting the US embassy in Kabul has Pakistan overreached itself?  mehr...

Mumbai 26/11 - Have the hotels learnt a lesson?

166 people were killed in the twin attacks on the Taj Mahal Hotel and the Trident Oberoi Mumbai. There were twin bombings in Jakarta Hotels namely Ritz Carlton and Marriott. Suicide bombers killed 8 persons and maimed 50. The 26/11 terrorist attack on the two Mumbai Hotels - The Taj and The Oberoi Trident was majorly responsible for exposing the vulnerability of the hospitality industry to such malicious man-made attacks. But has the incident changed the perception of the hospitality sector regarding their vulnerability to such attacks and security incidents? The writer takes stock of security enhancement in the hospitality sector, which has in recent times become a prime target of terrorist attacks and laments the attitude of trying to do the bare minimum essential to meet regulatory requirements.  more...

The German Navy – The Way Forward?

One of the largest fleets in NATO, the German Navy appears to have escaped most of the recent cuts imposed by the government’s austerity plan, since construction of the new vessels and upgrades for existing platforms seems to continue. However, the planned reduction of 60 percent in its defense budget could have negative effect in the future, if the government decides to press on with the cuts. To continue operating under these restricted budgetary constraints the Navy may have to reduce its mission sets, whilst assuming a reduced ‘asymmetric’ role focused on counter-piracy, peacemaking and peacekeeping operations, rather than full scale, high intensity operations.mehr...

Hotspot Mittlerer Osten: Syrien
