The Armed Forces consist of two components an/a

Active Component Reserve Component
Consists of:
  • soldiers

  • non-commissioned officers (NCOs)
  • officers

  • civilian personnel

Consists of slovenian citizens
  • who have signed a contract on the service in the reserve component (contract reservists)

  • members of the compulsory reserve (compulsory reservists).


The Slovenian Armed Forces are organised as unified armed forces without being divided into services. With regards to the territory and the needs of harmonised force planning and operation within the Alliance, the division of forces within the Alliance has been taken into consideration for conducting tasks on land, in the air and on the sea.

The SAF consist of the following branches:
  • infantry

  • armoured units

  • air forces

  • navy

  • artillery

  • air defence

  • engineers

  • nuclear biological and chemical defence

  • signals



Division of the combat units of the SAF:
Combat Forces Combat Support Forces
The basic purpose of combat forces is to defeat the enemy in direct combat with firepower and manoeuvres.
Consist of:
  • motorized units

  • armored units

  • infantry units

  • mountain warfare units

  • Special Forces

Are designed to provide firepower and operational support to combat forces.
Consist of:
  • engineer units

  • artillery units

  • intelligence and reconnaissance units

  • nuclear, biological and chemical defence units

  • air defence units

  • electronic warfare units

  • naval units

  • military police units

  • aviation units

Combat Service Support Forces Command Support Forces
Are designed to provide operational capabilities and to sustain the forces.
Consist of:
  • logistic units

  • air transport units

  • an air base and naval base

  • medical units

  • a logistic center

  • a military police unit

Ensure the uninterrupted operation of command and-control functions.
Consist of:
  • intelligence and reconnaissance units

  • HQ units

  • signal units

  • air space surveillance units

  • communications units



Furthermore the SAF is divided in:
  • Deployable Forces
    They are organised, equipped and trained to carry out any kind of mission at home and abroad.

  • Non-deployable Forces
    They are organised, equipped and trained

    • for missions within the national territory

    • supporting and supplementing deployable forces

    • supporting allied forces



In Terms of Operational Readiness the SAF is divided in three groups:
  • High-Readiness Forces
    Achieve full operational readiness within the period of 2 to 90 days. They are deployed for the protection of national interests and Alliance operations. They are only manned by members of the permanent force.

  • Low-Readiness Forces
    The forces have 91 to 180 days to achieve full operational readiness, are designed to support and supplement high-readiness forces in performing military defence of the Republic of Slovenia. They are manned by members of the professional forces and contracted reservists.

  • Long-Term Build-up Forces
    The forces, which need more than a year to reach full operational readiness, are designed for national defence and for supplementing other forces. They are manned by reservists.
